Benzo’s a dance with the devil

A friend for many years shared her story with me about her battle with trying to stop Xanax. Unfortunately there are far too many of these stories but unlike opiates, benzos rarely end in death. Thus no publicity. Long term use usually ends up destroying people lives. From personal experience I suffered through years of misery and loss of family, friends, jobs. The prevailing thought is just stop. If only it was that easy. If only it was remotely that easy. Generally there aren’t any medications to replace it. These are good medications, they do what they suppose to do. Relieve panic attacks and social and generalized anxiety disorder.

He never once told me there might be an issue with taking these meds long-term. In fact, he told me I probably needed them after I tried stopping them cold turkey and felt so sick I though I was going to die, she explained.

Her clinician put it like this and may have nailed it.

I have never prescribed Xanax again. There are too many people suffering. Maybe we were never properly trained or maybe we never were presented the information.

Isn’t that reassuring?

She continued to prescribe Klonopin and Ativan because they were safer, because of slower onset and longer half lives.

Boy, was she wrong and that’s part of the problem. The lack of understanding and knowledge by the people we trust our lives with.

And this is America?
