1986 World Series Hero/Goat Bill Buckner dies

While I feel bad in his passing Bill Buckner will always live on infamy if you’re a New York Met fan. Most people may not remember Bill Buckner although he was a hall of fame caliber first baseman for the Boston Red Sox.

Besides Boston fans, he will live in infamy with New York Mets fans as well all because of one play. A play that denied the Red Sox the 1986 world series. Recalling the Red Sox were winning 5-2 in the ninth inning of the sixth game, needing only one more victory to capture the 1986 world series. If memory serves me correctly there was one out.

The Mets center fielder Mookie Wilson came to the plate and promptly hit the ball off of the end of his bat and rolled as if hit with a pool stick down to Buckner who seemingly had a sure out, when inexplicably out went thru his legs and into the right-field corner

Allowing two runs to score. Making the score 5-4 Boston. Before you knew it the game was over and the Mets won 6-5 and went on to capture the series in 7 games…

Buckner was vilified by Sox fans, things got so bad, he faced death threats and he eventually moved to Montana to find peace

It was a shame to because up to that point he had a long and luxurious career. That play will live on in infamy and can be seen on replay over the years countless times on ESPN.

Say the name Bill Buckner, and what do you think of? Probably a baseball rolling under his glove and through his legs. And that’s just not fair. Buckner, who died yesterday at age 69, was an elite hitter, winning a batting title with the Chicago Cubs in 1980 (hitting .324), and he was an All-Star in 1981. He managed to hang around the big leagues for 22 years, an accomplishment in itself. But he’ll always be associated with that fielding error in the 1986 World Series that led to the Boston Red Sox losing Game 6 to the New York Mets. Still, he deserves to be remembered for so much more.
