Just another New Year’s Day

It was New Year’s day, I awoke about 9am and was drunker it seemed than when I had gone to sleep. So I managed to stand up, and proceeded to the boy’s room, staggering and bouncing off the walls in the hallway. I took care of business and said screw it. I’m going back to sleep. Around noon I awoke, but not because I wanted to because I heard a thunderous noise, of which I had never heard before.

We were aware that our foundation to our house had some issues, but nothing that required immediate attention. That’s what the engineer we hired to evaluate the situation.

I went straight to our bedroom sliding doors and what I saw scared me. The ground had sunk about 2 feet running down the side of the house. I proceeded to the basement as fast as my legs would take me. The foundation was bowing significantly, and then I heard the earth starting to shift and I got nervous so I split like a world-class athlete out of the basement, no sooner did I get to the top of the steps and another even louder thunderous noise. This is what I saw>>>

Foundation collapse below bedroom

And I look further in astonishment…

The Foundation collapsed along the whole side of the house

I was in a panic, I had no idea what to do, a child was sleeping in another room. Three dogs roaming the house and on New Year’s Day, there was absolutely no one to call for help. So out of desperation, I called the fire department and they came out. Now, these guys have seen everything. Wrong! They had never seen this. One thing they knew for sure was that the house was not safe to live in. The building commissioner arrived within the hour and had the fire department envelope the house in yellow tape. Crime scene stuff.

So off we went to a hotel all three of us, the dogs went to a shelter for temporary housing. So we hired contractors, who promised within 6 weeks to have it all done which included demolishing an add on room. The room needed to be taken down to rebuild the foundation.

So tomorrow is June 1st exactly 5 months since this whole expensive nightmare started. When I say expensive, I mean 60+ thousand dollars, the house was nearly paid off. Not anymore. Nevertheless, it dawned on me that it had been five months. You would think they would be done. Six weeks have passed and this what it looks like now.

Foundation rebuilt but lumber lays untouched

And the add on room or the four season room hasn’t even been started.

This was where the addition stood

That was how I spent my New Years day! Do you remember how you spent yours?
