Depression is a Real Disease

Depression a misunderstood Disease

Depression is a disease, if you had cancer, there would be an out pouring of support. Society recognizes cancer as real disease, a potentially life threatening disease. Society, does not recognize that depression can be just as severe. They fool themselves by saying they do, but they don’t. If they did, most people’s depression would have been mitigated.

Stay with me here as while i’m going to stray for a moment, I am going to tie this story together.

I am diabetic, and have been for ten years. Diabetes is a progressive disease, you can control it to some degree but it never goes away. It’s not curable. Everyday, and for me four times a day, I check my blood sugar . I prick my finger and apply the blood to a strip connected to a meter and I get my blood sugar level for that moment. Depending on the reading I take an appropriate amount of Insulin based on that reading

An endocrinologist will tell you over and over again, that reading is only for that moment, as you can check you blood sugar level a minute later and you will get a different reading. I could never grasp that concept that the reading was only for that moment. The tool they use to evaluate and diagnose and treat is based on another test, known as an a A1C which is a blood test that measure your blood glucose level over a 3 month period. This test or tool is the method in which the Doctor uses to determine how to treat you. How to measure how controlled your diabetes is and what treatment, is required

There is help

That said I now understand what the Doctor means when they say, when you prick your finger daily the reading is only for that moment in time

The same goes for anything in life, When your depressed, you might drink a cup of coffee upon waking, and feel better, but it is only for that moment. You might eat Pizza for lunch, go to the movies or do anything that gives you pleasure but is only for that moment. Depression lives in you on a constant basis, it doesn’t go away just by pleasing yourself for that moment. You might feel better but it’s only for that moment

It doesn’t cure your depression. Curing depression is a process, that takes time. It took you years to develop severe depression, it is going to take months, maybe years to cure your depression.

It’s imperative that depression be treated like any other disease in it’s early stages, for if you let it go, without professional help, therapy, medication, your depression will only worsen and take that much longer to get relief.

Sometimes we will let our depression grow to where it seems almost insurmountable to overcome. When that happens, suicide now becomes an option to relieve yourself of the pain.

I have gone through many trials and tribulations in my life, enough to feel like suicide seems like a viable option. If you let depression grow untreated to where you feel suicide is a viable option, you are in trouble.

Think back to happier times, think back to when life was good. Suicide would be the furtherist thing in your mind. You wouldn’t be able to comprehend how someone could do that.

It’s imperative you get help as soon as possible, not only professional help, but build a support system. It may be family, it may be friends, it may be a support group. You cannot do this alone. I repeat you can do this alone.

Don’t wait to it’s to late

If a support system is not in place the likelihood your depression increases is compounded.. Don’t let that happen. You may be depressed, you may not feel like getting out of bed. You can do something about it. It requires work, but it’s imperative you, rid yourself of your pride, humble yourself and accept that you need help. There is nothing wrong in accepting you have a disease and you can’t do it alone, you need support.

I don’t know exactly where I’m going with this other than to implore people to accept depression and to seek help from numerous avenues.

Mental Health stigma is alive and well, and although we like to think as a society we have come along way, we haven’t. Too many people live through misery, which occasionally results in someone committing suicide when it could have and should have been prevented.

Love cures many things, in fact Love can cure almost anything. We need more love in this world. We need to be kind to each other. We haven’t got there yet. Until we do people will suffer unnecessarily.

All we are asking is to give peace a chance!!!
