In a previous post Are Therapists, Psychologists Just Rent A Friends. I discussed the evolution of Psychiatry, whereby psychiatrist spent 45 minutes to an hour during a session performing psychoanalysis, with very little time spent on medication.
Today Psychiatrists spend 15 minutes at most during a session, write a prescription and tell you to come back in a Month or maybe ever three months. Essentially, to me they are just legal drug pushers.
There emphasis is on pharmacology, not on psychoanalysis, To me I don’t understand how under this format a determination can be made relative to diagnosis and proper medication.
That said I read an article, I don’t remember the publication however it discussed the role of therapists, social workers, psychologists.
It was suggested that why go to a therapist when you can just talk to a close friend and get the same benefit and it’s free.
I’ve seen all forms of therapists, counselors, social workers. I’ve also seen psychologists. To me there is a major difference between the first group and a psychologist.
A psychologist education is substantially more and psychologists are essentially psychiatrists, without the authorization to write prescriptions.
However regardless of who you chose for psychotherapy it is significantly more than talking to a friend. Most of the therapy revolves around a methodology known as CBT or Cognitive Behavioral therapy.
CBT is essentially talk therapy, however different approaches are taken.
Some use meditation therapy. Some use a method whereby you close your eyes and think of place you would want to be, that brings pleasant thoughts and through up to ten minutes of keeping your eyes closed they bring you to this place
While in this safe place you now begin to express your feelings. Express your state of mind whether it be anxiety depression, manic or bipolar symptoms, schizophrenia.
During the 50 minute session your remain in the safe place where you discuss issues that may evoke feelings of depression, of hurt, it may bring you to tears. This is a good thing.
The session continues in the safe place while you focus on issues, and at the conclusion they calmly bring you out of the place and bring you back to reality but not before your raw feelings have been soothed.
CBT or Cognitive Behavorial therapy regardless of the methods used have never worked for me. If someone asked me if talking to a friend was as beneficial, I would probably say yes.
Now on the flip side working with psychologists I find to be substantially more beneficial. Particularly, someone who is certified in a methodology known as EMDR or Rapid Eye Desiccation,
EMDR is amazing, I have gone throught numerous sessions of EMDR it’s the only method that works for me.
Essentially the concept behind EMDR is the processing of thoughts. When we sleep our eyes move from side to side, As we sleep, with our eyes moving side to side we process our thoughts, pushing the days events from out frontal lope and file it in our brain for recall when needed
People with Mental Health issue such as PTSD, cannot process there thoughts and troubling thoughts continue to reside in our frontal lope.
This leaves no room to process thoughts of daily activities, while disturbing thoughts continue to protrude into our daily lives
EMDR mimics the processing of thoughts as if we are sleeping by having the patient follow lights that continuously move from side to side. While following these lights and simultaneously talking about troubling or disturbing thoughts we are able to process these thoughts and remove them from the frontal lobe.
It’s amazing methodology that for me personally that has helped me immensly. No other therapy is able to do for me what EMDR does
